Saul was an enemy of Jesus, but Jesus loved him and saved him from his pride. That same love transformed an enemy into an apostle, and a persecutor to a preacher. On the road to Damascus, Saul was humbled – not as a punishment, but so that he could be who he had truly been designed to be.
